He pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢20,000, with four sureties who must all be Ghanaians.

In granting bail, the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, said, “If you have any chieftaincy problems, do not bring them to Ghana; settle them in your country.”

He adjourned the case to May, 21, 2014 for hearing.

Facts of the case

Presenting the facts of the case, Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuareka said the complainant, Eze Geoffrey Makwugwo, is a businessman resident at North Kaneshie, while Ekezie is also a traditional ruler and lives at Dansoman.

He stated that on March 23, 2014, a Nigerian businessman, Chief Agbawodikizu Aaron, who is a witness in the case, organised a naming ceremony at Patase Gardens at the Mallam Junction which attracted many Nigerians living in Accra.

He said when the dignitaries were about to be introduced at the ceremony, Eze Ekezie took the microphone from the master of ceremonies and ordered the complainant to leave the ceremony, else he (Ekezie) would kill him with a gun.

He said Ekezie immediately rushed to his car and pulled out a pump action gun and started firing indiscriminately.

“The complainant, sensing danger and realising that his life was being threatened, immediately took to his heels and reported the case to the police,” Chief Supt Tuareka added.

He said the accused person was later arrested and the gun retrieved from him.
