Nkosuo Initiative to win Ghc100,000 in January, 2020

The Young African Chief Executive Directors Network (YACEDX) announced the final shortlisted projects and organizations to pitch for its Y Price Award at the just ended African Magnates Summit (TAMS) which took place on August 19, 2019 at the Bank of Ghana Auditorium, University of Ghana main campus in Accra.

The Nkosuo Initiative was distinguished as a project with the potential to impact about 10,000 lives within 5 years of its execution. It was thus recognized with an award of excellence for exemplary work and contribution to economic development in Africa along with fourteen other projects.  In all, fifteen (15) projects and organizations out of sixty who submitted applications across the continent will pitch for the Ghc100,000 in January, 2020.

The Nkosuo Initiative is a Local Economic Development Project with a Community-based model aimed at Strengthening, Increasing and Diversifying the income of rural dwellers in small holder cocoa communities in Ghana, starting from Trotor a village at the outskirts of Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Whiles attaining the above goal through agribusiness, – i.e. large scale vegetable farming with value addition and significant market linkages, – the project is creating a sustainable stream of income for the Trotor Orphanage which caters for the educational needs of the entire community at its own cost. The Orphanage is home to 120 children and youth with its main funding source being random donations from benevolent people and organizations.

Mr. Joseph Dennis Nii Noi Quarcoo, the Project Lead of the Nkosuo Initiative stated that “the initiative will break the cycle of poverty endemic in smallholder cocoa communities by introducing vegetable farming and value addition as alternative livelihoods on a large scale. Key requirements are innovative leadership, boreholes for consistent water supply, tractors to mechanize land preparation and harvesting and the installation of a processing apparatus. The Nkosuo Initiative has initiated the pilot phase of the project with innovative leadership and is beckoning progressive organizations and individuals to partner for maximum impact.” The model is replicable.

Hopefully, the Nkosuo Initiative will emerge winners of the Y Price Challenge to expand the impact of the project with the Ghc100,000 award from YACEDX.
