Nsawam Hospital receives incubator
The Rotary Club of Accra, Labone, in partnership with Vodafone Ghana Foundation, has presented an incubator valued at GH¢10,000 to the Nsawam Government Hospital.
The donation, which formed part of the humanitarian works of the benefactors, is aimed at supporting the hospital to improve the health of newly born babies in the district.
It was donated in response to an appeal the management of the hospital made to the two bodies to help reduce the death of premature babies at the facility.
Decision
The Vice-President of the Rotary Club, Awura Adwoa Kye, corroborated this when she explained that the high infant mortalities reported at the hospital informed their decision to acquire the incubator.
A representative of Vodafone Ghana Foundation, Mr Carlis Arko, said he was hopeful the equipment would help reduce child mortality at the hospital.
The Medical Superintendent at the hospital, Dr Kofi Ablorh, thanked the benefactors for their support and reiterated that the timely provision of the incubator would help save lives.
“Rotary Club has shown that they are good partners in helping to improve on child survival,” he said.
Cases
In 2014, a total of 542 new-born babies were admitted to the hospital.
Eighty-two were born prematurely, 18 were referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and 11 of them died, representing 13 per cent.
Dr Ablorh said the percentage of child death could be reduced if the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital was well-equipped.
