The Ladies Club of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) has donated items worth GH¢4,000 to the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

The items included used clothing, footwear, edible oil, detergents, toiletries, bags of sachet water, rice, non-alcoholic beverages and fruits.

Receiving the items, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the hospital, Mr Emmanuel Pappoe, commended the club for its support.

According to him, the authorities had made appeals to individuals and corporate organisations to come to their aid, since they were in dire need of food items.

He deplored the attitude of people who had virtually dumped their relatives there without visiting them regularly, pointing out that for instance, out of 510 patients on admission at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, less than 20 of them were visited by their relatives regularly, and the rest were looked after by the government and through the benevolence of non-governmental organisations and churches.

Undue pressure

According to him, the situation was putting undue pressure on the authorities of the hospital, saying  that the hospital was also unable to locate the homes of a number of the inmates after their  recovery, and that was also a source of concern.

“Since January this year, we have been moving from place to place seeking support because the hospital lacks money to run the facility,” he said.

The President of the NVTI Ladies Club, Ms Comfort Ofori Angmor, said the club was motivated to donate to the hospital  following reports that it was short of food items.

She said the items were bought from the contributions of the club members, and added that “it is our way of standing in solidarity with the hospital, especially at this time when it is in need”.

She urged other organisations to come to the aid of the hospital in order to make the inmates live comfortable lives while receiving medical care, as well as help to speed up their recovery process.
