Omane Boamah opens 50-nation military summit in Accra on cyber threats and extremism
Military leaders from 50 countries are meeting in Accra for the 2025 Africa Land Forces Summit, which opened on Monday with discussions centred on cyber threats, violent extremism, and cross-border security concerns.
The summit brought together army chiefs and defence officials, including representatives from 40 African countries.
It opened a few hours after a ceremonial change of guard at Jubilee House.
The Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, opened the event on behalf of former President John Dramani Mahama.
He noted that the meeting provides an opportunity for land forces and their international counterparts to address security threats that continue to evolve across the continent and beyond.
Mr Boamah said information sharing, counter-intelligence, and joint planning remain useful tools in dealing with issues such as terrorism and cybercrime.
The United States is among the countries backing the summit. Its ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, attended the opening and delivered remarks on behalf of the US government.
Also in attendance were members of the diplomatic corps, Ghana’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, service chiefs of the Ghana Armed Forces, and delegations from military units in Africa, the United States, and Europe.
