Opong-Fosu warns of social media misuse fuelling ethnic tensions
A former Minister of State and governance expert, Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has cautioned against the growing misuse of social media to promote ethnic division, warning that it poses a serious threat to Ghana’s nation-building efforts.
He made the call during an engagement with the University of Ghana branch of the Asanteman Students Union.
The visit was to honour Mr Opong-Fosu for his public service and to formally invite him to serve as a mentor to the student body.
Speaking on the theme, “Escalation of Social Media Ethnic Division and Tensions – A Threat to Nation-Building,” the former minister underscored the dangers of online ethnic rivalries and hate speech. While recognising social media as a powerful tool for education and mobilisation, he said its misuse for spreading stereotypes, misinformation and hate undermines national cohesion.
“The same fire that cooks our food can also burn down the house,” he said, quoting an Ashanti proverb to highlight the double-edged nature of digital platforms. “Ethnic division is a poison, and social media has become its fastest carrier. But if used responsibly, it can also be the cure.”
Drawing from Ghana’s rich cultural diversity, Mr Opong-Fosu likened the country to a kente cloth woven from many colourful threads, warning that “when social media is misused to promote ethnic rivalry, the threads of our national fabric begin to tear apart.”
He challenged the youth, as the most active users of social media, to lead efforts to reverse this trend by promoting unity, challenging hate speech, and amplifying messages of tolerance and inclusion. “Before you post, ask yourself: does this message build bridges or burn them? Does it promote peace or provoke conflict?” he said.
On their part, the Asanteman Students Union commended Mr Opong-Fosu for his long-standing commitment to integrity and values-based leadership. Their president, Otu Agyemang, said the Union was keen to draw on his wisdom and experience to guide the next generation of leaders.
Accepting the invitation to serve as a mentor, Mr Opong-Fosu urged the group to take the lead in promoting cross-cultural understanding and de-escalating tensions online and offline.
“I am truly honoured by this call. The passion and determination of our young people inspire hope for Ghana’s future. Together, we must nurture a generation of leaders grounded in values, integrity, and service to humanity. I look forward to walking this journey with you,” he said.
The meeting ended with a renewed call for stronger collaboration between youth groups and experienced leaders to foster national unity and drive sustainable development.
