She said as parents, the onus was on them to provide the needs of their children.

Madam Mill made the appeal at the 10th anniversary celebration of  the Mephiboseth Training Centre; a school for the physically and mentally challenged children at Gomoa Ankamu, near Apam.

She said the government knew the importance of educating children with special needs, hence the establishment of special schools and the current policy of inclusive education.

She commended the founder of the school for his immense contribution to the establishment of these schools to cater for children with special needs.

The Gomoa West District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, appealed to philanthropists, corporate bodies and well-to-do citizens to complement the efforts of the government and the assembly to make these children achieve their dreams by donating tools and equipment necessary for their education to the school.

Prof. Bannie Nakasuji from  the University of Southern California who was a special guest, promised to strengthen the relationship between the university and the centre for the benefit of the students.

The Director-General of the centre, Pastor Joseph Jehu-Appiah, said the centre started with eight children in 2005 but now had 57 students.

He also said to prevent the children from feeling segregated, the centre’s administrators had started an integrated programme at the JHS level.

He added that the centre was finding it difficult to admit more children due to the problem of inadequate accommodation, payment of salaries for additional staff and a school bus.
