Police probe viral video of student stoned at school games

The Ghana Police Service has opened a formal investigation into a viral video showing a student being pelted with stones by a mob of other students.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 23, the police said they had seen the footage and condemned the violence.

“The Ghana Police Service has sighted a viral video in which a group of people are seen pelting stones at a student. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.

“The Service strongly condemns the violence and assures the public that all perpetrators will be identified and brought to justice,” it added.

Information from the Central Region indicates that the incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, during a district school's athletics competition in Agona Swedru.

The event, meant to promote youth talent and sportsmanship, turned violent following a confrontation between students of Awutu Obrachire Senior High Technical School and those believed to be from Swedru School of Business.

The victim, a student of Obrachire Senior High Technical School, was attacked with stones and sticks. He was taken to a health facility, where he is receiving treatment. Reports indicate he remains in a critical condition.

Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media platforms over the weekend, showing the student being attacked before some bystanders intervened. The footage has drawn condemnation, with calls for action from law enforcement and education authorities.
