The Parliamentary Select Committee on Economy and Development has commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for its role in regulating the country's downstream petroleum sector and its contribution to the country's economic growth.
Chairman of the Committee, Eric Afful, praised the Authority during a working visit to its headquarters, describing the NPA as a critical institution that helps keep the economy running while making significant contributions to Ghana's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The visit enabled members of the Committee to engage with the NPA's Chief Executive, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, and the Authority's executive management team to gain first-hand insight into its operations, regulatory mandate and ongoing reforms.
Afful explained that the visit formed part of the Committee's oversight responsibilities and was intended to follow up on previous engagements and verify relevant information. He emphasized that the Committee's objective was to collaborate with, rather than police, the Authority.
"We are not here as policemen, but to collaborate with the Authority," he said, while commending the NPA for its contributions to national development.
In his remarks, Mr. Tameklo thanked the Committee for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of Parliament's continued commitment to strengthening Ghana's downstream petroleum sector.
"Today, the Authority is honoured to receive members of this august Committee of Parliament. I have always maintained that the work of Members of Parliament is not a joke, and so today we have opened our doors for verification, so it does not become only the CEO's words," he said.
He reaffirmed the NPA's commitment to ensuring a safe, efficient and resilient downstream petroleum industry, adding that the engagement provided an opportunity to showcase the Authority's achievements, ongoing reforms and the critical role it continues to play in safeguarding the sector.
As part of the visit, members of the Committee toured key operational facilities at the NPA, where they were briefed on the functions of the Authority's technical departments and the systems that support its regulatory oversight of the downstream petroleum industry.
