Members of the Association for the Empowerment of Disabled Persons, in collaboration with the Ejisu/Juabeng Municipal Assembly, have organised a clean-up exercise at the Ejisu Government Hospital aimed at improving sanitation conditions at the hospital and its environs.

The exercise was in response to the call for a national monthly clean-up aimed at bringing about improvement in sanitary conditions nationwide and ensure proper management of the environment.

The members, accompanied by Mr Kwaku Afrifah Yamoah Ponko, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juabeng, cleared weeds, collected refuse and cleared silt from choked gutters in the hospital and the community.

After the exercise, Mr Afrifah Yamoah Ponko said he was impressed with the  commitment shown by members of the association. He said they had exhibited patriotism and the preparedness to sacrifice to see the country develop.

He said over the years, persons with disability in the society were neglected and denied the use of certain social amenities, a situation that forced some of them to go on the streets to beg for alms.

He said the involvement of persons with disability in the national sanitation day exercise demonstrated that they were capable and ready to offer their services for the advancement of the country.

Mr Yamoah Ponko urged Ghanaians to embrace the call to national duty and ensure to coexist peacefully.

The National President of the Association for the Empowerment of Disabled Persons, Mr Isaac Nana Kwadwo Antwi, said a number of disabled persons resorted to begging for alms due to neglect by society and the government.

He said lack of access to educational institutions and public places was hampering improvement of persons with disability. He has, therefore, stressed the need for the government to support persons with disability to enable them to contribute their quota to national development.
