Petroleum Ministry launches programme to promote use of LPG in rural areas

The Minister of Petroleum, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has underscored the need for the public to shift from the use of wood fuels to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is cleaner, safer and healthier for cooking.

He observed that the continued use of wood fuels was having a toll on the nation’s forest reserves and the environment, as well as causing respiratory diseases among people.

The minister made the call when the ministry launched the rural LPG promotion programme at Dzolo-Kpuita in the Ho West District in the Volta Region on Tuesday.

At least 3,000 pieces of six-kilogramme cylinders with stoves and accessories have been distributed to people in the Ho West District.

Tonnes of firewood burnt

Mr Buah said approximately 13 million tonnes of firewood was burnt annually in the country, a situation which has contributed enormously to the depletion of the forest cover of the country.
