Photos: Revellers killed while celebrating assembly man’s victory

Three persons, including a woman, died at Assin Kyekyewere around 6.45 p.m. Tuesday when a taxi ran into jubilant supporters of an assembly member elect who were celebrating their candidate’s victory in the district level elections.

Thirteen others were injured, with four who were seriously injured receiving treatment in health facilities at Assin Fosu.

According to the Assin Darmang District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr Okyere Andam, the driver of an Opel Astra taxi, with registration number CR 528-13, ignored all calls for caution and drove into the crowd, killing the three on the spot.  The driver of the vehicle is said to be on the run.

Mr Andam said supporters and family members of Mathew Botchwey, alias California, who had won the assembly election at Assin Kyekyewere, took to the streets jubilating after the results had been announced.

According to him, the procession, including a Toyota Avensis saloon car, with registration number CR 694-14, slowed down traffic on the road. The police are conducting investigations.
