Ten arrested for fake online food delivery scam

The Ghana Police Service has arrested ten people for allegedly creating fake online food delivery platforms to defraud unsuspecting customers.

In a statement dated October 13, 2025, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said the suspects were apprehended in two separate operations at Sogakope in the Volta Region and Haatso in Accra.

According to the police, six suspects were first arrested on October 1, 2025, at Sogakope following an intelligence-led operation.

They have been identified as Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah, comprising three men and three women.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police have revealed that the suspects had created fake websites and social media pages impersonating popular food brands.

“Victims who placed orders through these fake platforms were directed to make advance payments via mobile money, after which they never received the food they ordered,” the statement said.

The police added that some of the suspects gained access to victims’ mobile money wallets and bank accounts under the pretext of helping them complete transactions. They then withdrew money from the accounts without the victims’ consent.

Digital devices believed to have been used in the fraudulent operations were retrieved and are undergoing forensic analysis, the statement added.

A second operation was carried out on October 12, 2025, leading to the arrest of four additional suspects at a hideout at Haatso in Accra.

They have been named as Elijah Sotama Etse, alias Pop Smoke, described by the police as the leader of the syndicate, together with Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli.

Twelve mobile phones have been seized from the suspects and are being kept for forensic examination, according to the police.
