The Chief Executive Officer of the KMA, Mr Kojo Bonsu, gave the order to have the building, named after an Ashanti King, closed down following a tour of the run-down facility.

The Prempeh Assembly Hall has not seen any major rehabilitation since it was built in 1938. According to Mr Bonsu, in view of the important role that the facility played, it was pertinent that it was reshaped to make it more habitable.

Renovation

The renovation works would include re-wiring of the entire building, installation of air-conditioners, lighting, electronic projectors and expansion of the seating area.

Vision

After work on the building has been completed, the assembly is set to redesign a new plan for the use of the place. It is anticipated that the new Prempeh Assembly Hall would be positioned to play host to major international conferences and movie premieres.

Mr Bonsu said he was in talks with Silver Bird Cinema in Accra to consider locating a branch to the Prempeh Assembly Hall when it was completed. He said the move was intended to attract big film producing houses to have some of their films premiered in Kumasi.

Consar Ltd

The Managing Director of Consar Ltd, contractors undertaking the renovation, Mr Stefano Ramella Pezza, assured Mr Bonsu that work on the project would be completed on schedule.
