In that direction, the moderator said the church had extended the delivery of quality healthcare to almost every corner of the country, adding that it would continue to provide both logistical and infrastructural support to its health facilities.

The moderator gave the assurance at the 14th general assembly of the church at Abetifi in the Kwahu West District of the Eastern Region.

The General Assembly, which is the highest decision-making body of the church, attracted about 600 commissioners and corresponding members from all the 19 presbyteries, including the newly inaugurated overseas presbytery, and partners (both local and foreign) to draw a missionary agenda for the new ecclesiastical year.

According to the moderator, the church has opened a new clinic at Abasua in the Ashanti Region to take care of the ever increasing population in the area that have to walk a long distance to access healthcare.

He said the church renovated a rented building with GH¢10, 000.00 from the General Assembly Office, constructed an access road, bought furniture and extended electricity to the facility.

The Agogo Hospital, which is providing supervisory role, provided beds, mattresses and basic equipment such as blood pressure apparatus and weighing scale.

Rev. Professor Martey said in March this year, the church also handed over the Duayaw-Nkwanta Girls’ Vocational Institute to the Health Unit of the church to convert it into a health training institute.

He said the facility would start with a post-basic midwifery programme and later upgrade it to a diploma-awarding institution.

Education delivery

To continue enhancing education delivery in the country, the moderator said the Education Department of the church had put plans in place to ensure that at least every region in the country had one senior high school.

This is to ensure that education is placed at the doorstep of every Ghanaian everywhere.

He said presently, there were three geographical regions in the country without a Presbyterian senior high school. The regions are Western, Volta and Upper West.

The moderator also announced that the church was going to institute an awards scheme for all categories of teachers at every level, including the best chaplain, best head and best teacher.

Business development

The moderator said to rejuvenate the business mindset of the church, the Presbyterian Salem Financial Service had been started and registered as a limited liability company. The church owned 50 per cent stake in the service, while the other 50 per cent was being floated for presbyteries, districts and congregations, as well as individuals in the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

He also mentioned that the church had renovated the Presbyterian Press which was a division of the A-Riss Company to be the market leader in printing security and business forms, church service materials and other commercial printing items on the Ghanaian market.

Church’s pension scheme

In order to pay a reasonable amount to retired agents of the church, the moderator mentioned that certain recommendations had been put in place, including increasing the minimum monthly pension which is to be increased by 50 per cent from GH¢200.00 to GH¢300.00 (for retired ministers) and that of widows by 100 per cent from GH¢100.00 to GH¢200.00, effective, September 1, 2014.

Eastern Regional Minster

The Eastern Regional Minister, who was the guest of honour, commended the Presbyterian Church for its contributions to socio-economic development of the country since its establishment in 1828.

He said without doubt, the government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of developing the nation, and, therefore, encouraged the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the entire Christian community and, indeed, other faith-based organisations to continue partnering the government in its development efforts.  “Ghana needs mutual respect, collaboration, co-operation and a concerted effort from all stakeholders in the quest to develop our dear nation,” he maintained.

The regional minister said the government, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, would continue to provide the enabling environment to sustain such a fruitful partnership.
