President Akufo-Addo endorses Flowerpot Flyover, Ofankor-Nsawam road projects

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his excitement about the progress of the Flowerpot Flyover and the Ofankor-Nsawam road projects, expressing the optimism that both projects will meet the completion deadlines.

"The contractors are doing a good job, so we should all encourage them to finish so that the project can be fully actualised and operational," the President said during an inspection tour last Thursday.

During the tour, the engineers working on both projects assured the President that they were on track, and that the projects would be completed within the set timeframe.

Flowerpot Project

The Flowerpot Flyover project, which is 85 per cent complete, is set to be opened to traffic in October, this year.

The significant infrastructure project, which started in 2017, is expected to revolutionise traffic connectivity between the northern and southern regions of the motorway, promising smoother and more efficient travel for commuters traversing key areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex and Tema.

The GH¢147 million project, being undertaken by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited, involves the construction of an 802-metre viaduct across the Accra-Tema Motorway and the Flowerpot Roundabout on the Spintex Road.

The scope of work include a dual carriageway viaduct with asphalt concrete surfacing, a ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills, a ramp from the viaduct onto the Motorway towards Tema, and a slip road from the Motorway to the Boundary Road Roundabout.

Additionally, the project include the construction of a new road through the old tunnel at East Legon and an additional exit to Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange.

During the inspection, it was observed that significant progress had been made on the Flowerpot project.

The construction of a dual carriageway with drainage systems was nearing completion, while other service lanes had already been finished.

The Director of the Department of Urban Roads, James Amoo-Gottfried, mentioned that the superstructure was 85 per cent complete, with all the concrete work fully done.

He said after studying traffic patterns in the area, it became evident that traffic congestion would persist even after the completion of the project.

He, therefore, said the engineers decided to conduct a holistic study of the area.

"We have decided to include the old tunnel in the project, designing the road so that traffic from Shiashie will not need to pass through the new tunnel. This should significantly reduce traffic congestion in the area," Mr  Amoo-Gottfried explained.

Ofankor-Nsawam Project

Regarding the Ofankor-Nsawam road project, the contractor gave the assurance that it would be completed before the end of the year.

The 33.4-kilometre project, which forms part of the Accra-Kumasi road network, commenced in 2022.

It includes the construction of four interchanges and flyovers at Amasaman, Kpobiman, Medie and Nsawam Junction.

Funded by the government, the project is being undertaken by Maripoma Enterprise Limited at a cost of GH¢342.48 million.

The Chief Resident Engineer overseeing the Pokuase-Nsawam Highway project, Kwabena Bempong, said major portions of the project had already been completed.

He mentioned that work had begun on a ramp extending from the project area to the Amasaman township, and that the railway bridge was almost completed, with only the filling work remaining.

"We have already completed the superstructure, and the approach roads will be done soon," Mr Bempong stated.
