FULL TEXT: Akufo-Addo's 7th COVID Update speech (Lockdown lifted)

It comes a week after the President lifted a partial lockdown on Greater Accra, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi in his seventh update on April 19. Since that address, where President Akufo-Addo announced that 1,042 persons had tested positive for Coronavirus in Ghana, an additional 508 persons have been confirmed positive for the illness bringing Ghana's total to 1,550 ahead of his address tonight.

The President in his April 19 address hinted of an expected spike in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases given that there was "a backlog of some eighteen thousand (18,000) tests whose results" were yet to be received.

He said the main reason why Ghana had seen an increase in the number of confirmed cases over the previous three weeks was because of the decision to aggressively trace and test contacts of infected persons.

He said: "This (aggressive contact tracing) has enabled us to identify and isolate infected persons, protect the population from further infections, and contain better the spread of the virus. Indeed, Ghana is the only other country in Africa to have conducted more than sixty thousand tests, and we are ranked number one (1) in Africa in administering of tests per million people".

The President also called for stricter adherence to social distancing and encouraged all Ghanaians to wear face masks.
