Prez Mahama inaugurates Berekum water project

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a small town water project at Fetentaa in the Berekum Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region with an assurance that the rural areas will continue to benefit from projects that will improve their lives.

The President, who is in the Brong Ahafo Region on a two-day working visit, arrived to a rapturous welcome at the Sunyani Airport before driving to Fetentaa for the inauguration of the project.

The Fetentaa Project is one of 15 small town water projects being undertaken in the Brong Ahafo Region under the Peri-Urban Rural and Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project.

Ten of the small water projects have been completed while the remaining five are about 85 per cent complete.
The Peri-Urban Rural and Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project is being implemented at a cost of €21.02million.
All the 27 districts of the Brong Ahafo Region are benefiting from the project.
The government is financing the project with the Ghana Water Company and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency as the implementing bodies.

Other projects

Other projects being executed include 700 boreholes and 19 hand-dug wells all fitted with hand pumps.
To ensure sustainability of the water projects, area mechanics had been trained to provide maintenance.
President Mahama said water is a necessity of life, for which reason the government would ensure that every community got potable water.

Roads

He also touched on road projects saying the region was getting its fair share.
He announced that he would return to the region soon to cut the sod for work to begin on some roads under the cocoa roads rehabilitation programme.
Roads to benefit from the programme include the seven-kilometres Berekum town and the Berekum-Drobo roads.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, said the numerous water projects being undertaken throughout the country was a testimony to the commitment of the government to get the best for the people.
The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, called on the people of the region to continue to have confidence in the President and the government.

The Omanhene of Berekum, Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, commended the government for the many good things he was doing for the Berekum area.
