Kaneshie flood victims cry of neglect

A number of residents of Kaneshie who were affected by the massive flooding that hit the Accra Metropolis on June 3 have complained of having been cut out of the distribution of relief items by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

According to them, following the disaster, NADMO officials came round to register persons affected by the tragedy so they could be assisted, but unfortunately, they were sidelined during the distribution exercise.

A resident affected by the disaster, Mrs Afia Oppong, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said when the buses containing the relief items arrived for distribution, there was a surge of people, including those who were not affected by the storm.

Under the circumstances, officials from NADMO put aside the initial registration list and went about throwing the items into the crowd.
She said the items sent to Kaneshie included mattresses, plastic bowls and buckets.

“I lost everything in my house, my children and I do not have anywhere to sleep,” she added.

Distribution

Describing how the items were distributed, she said the distribution trucks were set upon by a large crowd making it difficult for the officials from NADMO to control them.

Because of that, the officials, who were trapped in the vehicle, had no other choice than to throw the items out of the trucks.

According to Mrs Oppong, many women and children could not get any of the items as they were pushed around roughly.

“There were people, particularly the strong ones who left the place with two or three blankets, leaving others with nothing,” she said.
She was angry that people who were not affected by the floods were the ones who benefited from the donation.

Call on NADMO

Mrs Oppong has, therefore, called on NADMO to come to the aid of the Kaneshie victims once again since they still needed assistance.
She appealed to the relief agency to endeavour to go by the list of registered victims the next time to ensure fairness, as well as keep order and peace.
