Prez Mahama inaugurates market at New Abirem
President John Dramani Mahama yesterday inaugurated a new market at New Abirem, the capital of the Birim North District, as he resumed his re-election campaign in the Eastern Region.
Construction work
The market has 70 lockable stores, 279 sheds, a butcher's shop, a day care centre, modern sanitation facilities and a lorry park, among other facilities.

Explaining why the construction of the project has taken a long time, President Mahama said the project, which originally started in 1999 under the Agriculture Sector Improvement Programme (ASIP), was abandoned after the change of government in 2001.
However, when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regained power, the district assembly, through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), resumed the construction of the project leading to its successful completion.
President Mahama emphasised the importance of the market to the social and economic progress of the district and asked the people to take advantage of it to improve their lot.
He said the government had initiated a programme to rebuild old markets in the country.
Other projects
Touching on other projects, President Mahama said a number of roads in the area were under construction while others had been completed.
He assured the people that the government would continue to undertake projects to better their lives.
