The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) yesterday distributed relief items to 264 people who were affected by the June 3 floods in parts of Accra.

The items included sleeping mats, blankets, bed sheets, pieces of cloth, hygiene kits, water treatment bags, mosquito nets, detergents and toiletries, valued at GH¢150,000.

The beneficiaries were drawn from Nima, Awoshie, Alajo, Adabraka and Low McCarthy Hill. Each beneficiary was given an undisclosed amount of money to pay for transport back home, as the presentation took place at the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the GRCS.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Michael Agyekum Addo, National President of the GRCS, who presented the items to the beneficiaries, said following the floods, the GRCS conducted a rapid needs assessment to know the number of persons who were affected by it.
The report, he said, indicated that about 9,255 people were displaced by the floods in the five localities, including the aged, pregnant women, children, widows and lactating mothers.

Dr Addo said the society could support 264 people with the relief items and would also set up five first-aid posts in the affected communities.

He indicated, however, that the GRCS would continue with the assessment to find out the most vulnerable and provide them with the needed support.

Response

A beneficiary, Mrs Beatrice Twum, a resident of Alajo, commended the GRCS for the support it had provided for the beneficiaries.
She said it had been a challenge bouncing back to business, since she lost everything to the flood waters.

Another beneficiary, Mr Godfrey Aidoo, who resides at Awoshie, said although the flood victims needed food, the items presented to them were some of their most pressing needs.

He thanked the GRCS for the support and called on other benevolent organisations to support them.
