Renew commitment towards a united Africa -African leaders urged
African leaders have been urged to renew their commitments towards the realization of a united Africa and channel their energies towards uplifting the continent from stagnation.
A statement signed by the Secretary General of the All Africa Students Union (AASU), Awaah Fred said, although the continent has been liberated from colonialism and apathy, it does not reflect in the living conditions of the African populace.
The statement was released in commemoration of the African Union (AU) Day on May 25.
According to AASU, African leaders have failed to address the myriad of challenges facing the continent. They further described as alarming the rate at which African youth are leaving the continent to seek greener pastures elsewhere at the peril of their lives.
AASU is therefore, calling on African leaders to put an end to lip service and leave no stone unturned in addressing the challenges confronting the continent.
“They must fast track the integration of the continent through reinforcing the power of the African Union (AU), stop being exporters of raw materials, build strong industries, adequate infrastructures and solid common defense forces.”
According to AASU, AU Day should serve as a thoughtful moment for all meaning African leaders who want to improve the lot of their citizens.
“AASU, once again, calls on African leaders to pursue with honesty, total commitment, hard work, selflessness the objective of African unity; to accept the principles of democratic rule; to surrender part or all their powers to a strong and better structured African Union.”
It also urged African youth not to lose hope but believe in hard work and selflessness, and use the occasion to reflect on strategies that can enable them contribute to changing the fortunes of the continent.
