The project was executed by the Sankofa Franco-Ghanaian Association based in France, with funds provided by the District Council of Yvelines, the Regional Council of Île-de-France and the Agency of Micro Projects, all in France.

It was constructed at a cost of 20,000 euros.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Gomoa East District Early Childhood Officer at the Ghana Education Service, Madam Ruby Kwakye, called on parents to enroll their children early in school to enable the children to acquire the needed foundation at the basic level.

According to her, it was totally unacceptable for children of school-age to be allowed to stay at home for years.

She explained that the pre-school system was part of the mainstream school with the objective of providing a proper foundation for schoolchildren.

Sankofa

In a speech read on his behalf, the President of the Sankofa Franco-Ghanaian Association, Mr Alfred Ohene-Akonor, said with the completion of the project, the general objective of improving the lives of the children of Gomoa Ekroful would be achieved through the use of the facility.

He thanked all who, in one way or another, contributed towards the completion of the project for the benefit of the pupils who hitherto had to study in a makeshift structure.

He commended the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Ernest Quarm, who played an instrumental role in lobbying for the project.

“It is the utmost responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure the efficient running and maintenance of this infrastructure to benefit future generations,” he stressed.

He also lauded the three funding agencies for their resolve to provide the funds needed to undertake the project.

The Gomoa East District Chief Executive, Mr Jonamoah Moses Jehu-Appiah, thanked the sponsors for their immense contribution towards the project and the people of the area for undertaking communal labour to support the project.

He bemoaned the lack of maintenance culture in most establishments and called on the school authorities to regularly maintain the facility.

Assembly member

Mr Quarm stated that the absence of a proper pre-school block affected teaching and learning, for which reason he wrote a proposal to Sankofa for assistance.

He admitted that the non-availability of a place of convenience compelled most of the pupils to attend to the call of nature in nearby bushes with its attendant dangers.
