Six nabbed for stealing GH¢18,074 of power
Six persons, including the assembly member for the Agbedrafor electoral area in the Keta District, have been arrested for illegally using electricity worth GH¢18,074.
The assembly member, Emmanuel Amuzu, is alleged to have illegally used electricity worth GH¢3,674.03 to power his irrigation pumps for the past three years.
The other five suspects, Janet Darvordze, E.C. Agboada, Etu Klagbo, David Kwame Ocloo and Bright Serene, were alleged to have illegally used electricity amounting to GH¢14,400 in their houses and to power water pumps to irrigate their farms.
Amuzu has since paid GH¢1,550.00 of the total of GH¢3,674.03 which is cost of the electricity he used illegally.
Monitoring exercise
The six were arrested during a house-to-house monitoring exercise by the Revenue Protection Unit of the ECG in the Volta Region. It forms part of a nationwide exercise.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Volta Regional branch of ECG, Mr Fred Baimbill-Johnson, the suspects were found to have illegally connected electricity to their homes to power water pumps to irrigate their farms.
After the arrest, the six were handed over to the Keta Police to continue with investigations into the matter. They have since been granted police enquiry bail.
Giving a breakdown of the indebtedness of the other suspects, Mr Baimbill-Johnson said Janet owed GH¢5,273.73; E.C. Agboada, GH¢1,023.92; Klagbo, GH¢2,944.19; Ocloo, GH¢2,989.91 and Serene, GH¢ 2,170.35.
Police support
The Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, Ing. Joseph Forson, commended the police for their unflinching support for the exercise and the cooperation of customers in volunteering information on illegal activities in their neighbourhoods.
Ing Forson said the ECG was liaising with the police to ensure that the arrested customers were prosecuted and punished for power theft.
