Kumasi: Stampede at Baba Yara Stadium leaves five injured during GAF screening

Five young people were injured during a stampede at the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) screening exercise at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Wednesday, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, the victims sustained various injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

“I have directed that they receive the best possible medical care and full support to aid their recovery,” Dr. Amoakohene said in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

He described the incident as unfortunate and assured the public that measures would be taken to prevent similar occurrences during future recruitment or screening exercises.

“We deeply regret this incident and will ensure that all future recruitment and screening exercises are conducted in a safe, orderly, and humane manner,” the Minister said.

Dr. Amoakohene extended sympathy to the injured and their families, noting that the regional administration’s priority is their full recovery and wellbeing.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected individuals and their families,” he added.

The Ghana Armed Forces is conducting a nationwide recruitment and screening exercise across all 16 regions.

The stampede in Kumasi follows an earlier incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, which left six people dead and several injured.

That incident prompted a Board of Inquiry and the suspension of recruitment activities in the Greater Accra Region.
