Identified as Mr Lambert Akansah, the 45-year-old father of four is said to have used a nylon rope to hang himself on a mango tree near his apartment at Ogome-Brigade in Somanya.

Mr Akansah is reported to have been invited by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to Accra on December 29, 2014 in connection with investigations into the alleged misappropriation of GH¢7.9 million belonging to the scheme.

His body was found hanging on the mango tree that same day he was to report himself to the BNI.

Mr Akansah, who stayed with his two wives and the four children, was believed to be among the 23 district directors of the NSS who are under investigations by the BNI.

Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic, the Akuse District Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) Mr Francis Ackaah, said the police received a report on December 29, 2014 that the Suhum Municipal Coordinator of the NSS had committed suicide.

Abandoned home

According to him, the family told the police that about 1 a.m. on December 29, 2014, Mr Akansah left his two wives at home and went out quietly.

“About 7 a.m. when the family woke up and wanted to do their morning devotion, they searched for him but could not find him in the house.

“They later found his body hanging on a mango tree outside their home,” the police commander stated.

No foul play

ASP Ackaah said the police did not suspect any foul play.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to the morgue of the 37 Military Hospital for post-mortem.

“The police will be able to establish the cause of death after the autopsy has been done,” ASP Ackaah said.
