Out of the number, 1,245 applicants were admitted to pursue tertiary programmes.

They are made up of 1,026 males and 432 females, while 251 applicants were offered admission into the non-tertiary programmes (77 males and 174 females).

According to the Rector of the polytechnic, Professor Thomas Kwadwo Djang-Fordjour, who announced this at the 19th matriculation ceremony of the polytechnic in Sunyani at the weekend, there had been an increase in students’ enrolment in the School of Engineering.

Prof. Djang-Fordjour, however, expressed worry over the decline in enrolment at the tertiary and non-tertiary programmes including the School of Business and Management Studies.

“Enrolment in the tertiary and non-tertiary programmes in the departments under the School of Business and Management Studies is witnessing a serious decline. This trend must be reversed,” he said.

New programmes

He said in line with the polytechnic’s vision to offer more programme options to the students, the school has introduced new programmes including Bachelor of Technology in Accounting with Computing, Higher National Diploma (HND) in Dispensing Technology, HND in Information and Communications Technology, and HND in Material Engineering.

The rest are HND in Fashion Design, Textiles, Ceramics Technology, Diploma in Computerised Accounting (DCA) and Banking Technology and Accounting (DBTA).

Currently, the polytechnic runs 26 full-time tertiary programmes including two Bachelor of Technology (B-Tech) programmes, 20 HND programmes and four technician programmes.

Affiliation

He said the polytechnic had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to affiliate with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to jointly award the Bachelor of Technology degree in Building Technology.

Prof. Djang-Fordjour said, in addition, the polytechnic had also signed an MoU with the University of East London to enable both its staff and students to pursue further studies in London.

Challenges

He said the high attrition and retirement rates of staff in the polytechnic were affecting academic work, adding that the situation had forced the administration to engage part-time lecturers.

He, therefore, called on the Ministry of Finance and Economic planning to give “the polytechnic financial clearance to enable us to replace retired staff and also engage new ones.”
