Take part in national clean-up exercises
The Southern Ghana Union Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, has urged its members to participate in the crusade against insanitary conditions in the country.
The Executive Secretary of the Southern Ghana Union conference of the SDA church, Pastor Dr. Thomas Takyi Ocran, said the establishment of a national sanitation day was in line with the church's doctrine of promoting good health including diet and clean environment.
A National Sanitation Day has currently been instituted mandating all citizens to clean up their communities. The day is observed on the first Saturday of every month.
Records from the Ghana health service indicate that about 22,300 people were affected by the outbreak of cholera nationwide this year.
It was to stem the onset of the disease and other ailments that influenced the decision of the government to come up with the day.
In view of the fact that the nation-wide clean up exercises fall on Saturday which coincidentally is the day of worship for Seventh Day Adventists, the church has resolved to do clean- ups on Sunday.
Last Sunday, the church undertook cleanup exercises in some parts of Accra including Osu, Mamobi and Accra New Town. Mr James Hukportie, Assistant Transport Officer of the Waste Management Department of the AMA, who provided assistance to the church during the clean-up, said the AMA was ready to assist all groups eager to organise clean up exercises whenever it was contacted.
