Ghana Water Company MD resigns
The Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Godwin Kweku Dovlo, has resigned. He presented his resignation letter last Thursday.
Confirming his resignation to the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of water Resources, Works and Housing Mr Abraham Otabil, said Mr Dovlo did not give any reason for his decision.
According to Mr Otabil, the resignation letter said he (Mr Dovlo) had decided to proceed on his two years accumulated leave, prior to his resignation.
Mr Otabil said the ministry had accepted his decision and wished him well in his future endeavours.
He said the Deputy Managing Director of the company, Mr Fred Lokko, had been asked to act until a substantive MD was appointed.
Mr Otabil described the outgoing Managing Director’s many years working with the GWCL and his close to two years of heading the company, as quite fruitful and, therefore, his decision to step aside for another person to take over from where he ended, should be respected.
Allegation against GWCL
Mr Dovlo had been the subject of a board of inquiry, following allegations by the company’s production staff at Weija that water supplied to residents of Accra was unwholesome.
But, Mr Otabil stated that the MD’s resignation had nothing to do with the allegation of unwholesome water made by the workers.
“It has come out clearly that it is untrue. It is unfounded. The water from Weija has been in existence since Guggisberg’s time and it has been wholesome since.’’
For his part, the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, commended Mr Dovlo for his good work and for ensuring that the vision of the government at attaining 100 per cent rural and urban water coverage through a number of projects were on course.
The Minister wished Mr Dovlo well in his future endeavours, while he charged the acting Managing Director, Mr Lokko, to work hard and selflessly to advance the operations and vision of the GWCL.
Mr Dovlo’s journey at GWCL
Mr Dovlo, who assumed office as Managing Director on April 12, 2013, took over from Mr Kweku Botwe, who was directed to report at the ministry for reassignment.
Until his appointment, Mr Dovlo was the acting Deputy Managing Director of the company and had previously held diverse management positions in Ghana Water Company Limited.
He started off in 1979 as an assistant engineer in Kumasi and was appointed the distribution engineer for the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area in 1986. In 1995, Mr Dovlo was promoted to the position of Area Engineer for the Greater Accra Region. From 1999 to 2009, he, among other positions, headed the Upper East, Northern and Central regions, becoming the Chief Manager in charge of Accra East area, a position he held until January 2012 when he was appointed acting Deputy Managing Director of GWCL, and later confirmed as the substantive managing director of the company.
