The hall was built and equipped at the cost of GH¢300,000.

The Minister of Fisheries and Acquaculture Development, Mr Nayon Bilijo, who inaugurated the building last Friday, also inaugurated a vehicle fitted with public address system to educate members of the National Fisheries Association of Ghana (NAFAG) on fisheries laws and regulations.

NAFAG is an umbrella organisation of all fishermen organisations.

Capacity of hall

The equipment in the hall, which has the capacity to seat 300 people, will help to monitor vessels at sea.

Mr Bilijo called on the fishermen to make full use of the facility to help boost the industry.

He said the government had already embarked on a fisheries improvement policy designed to deal with the factors responsible for the decline of fish stock.

The minister stated that the ministry was collaborating with the World Bank, Global Environmental Facility and Department for  International Development to  improve the fishing industry.

Mr Bilijo explained that the government would strengthen fisheries associations with the provision of technical assistance, goods and training to build capacity of  operators in the industry.

NAFAG

The President of NAFAG, Flt Lt M.G. Tackie, said with the completion of the project, situations where vessels strayed into Ghana’s territorial waters would not occur again.
