Tense gunfight: Police kill 2 suspected robbers, launch manhunt for accomplices

The Police on Monday thwarted what was a suspected planned armed robbery, which had targeted a foreign national in Accra.

The police response resulted in the death of two suspects and injury to a police officer.

The foiled attempt followed an intelligence-led operation by the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).

The police in a statement said the operation took place on Monday [July 15, 2025] after credible intelligence revealed that five armed men were lodging at a hotel in Labadi, planning to stage an attack at Cantonments, an Accra suburb.

While the suspects were en route to execute their operation onboard a Toyota Yaris vehicle, they detected surveillance by the police and opened fire on the police. "While en route to their target location... the suspects, detecting police surveillance, opened fire on the police team shooting one of our officers in the process," the statement said.

Police returned fire during the confrontation, injuring two of the suspects. The injured assailants were taken to the Police Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

A police officer who sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and underarm during the shootout is currently on admission and responding to treatment. "The injured officer... is receiving medical attention and responding to treatment," the police confirmed.

Items retrieved from the scene include two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, live cartridges, three mobile phones, talismans, and other materials believed to be linked to the foiled attack.

Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the remaining three suspects who are currently on the run. The Police have assured the public of their continued commitment to ensuring safety and security across the country.
