Teshie Traditional Council cleans landing bay

As part of efforts to curb the spread of cholera, the Teshie Traditional Council last Saturday organised a clean-up exercise at the Teshie Sangonaa Landing Bay.

The bay is where fishermen, particularly those from the area, offload their catch and sell to the public.

Unfortunately, the area of the landing bay is strewed with solid and liquid waste and this is negatively affecting the health of traders and fishermen who operated there.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Dzasetse of Teshie, Nii Ashikwei Kwaobotswe II, urged residents of Teshie to maintain a clean and healthy environment in order to help curtail the spread of cholera.

According to him, efforts being made by authorities to control the disease would not yield the needed impact if people refused to adhere to proper waste management practices.

He said the filth in the capital did not only pose a health hazard to residents but also created a bad image for the city.

Clean-up exercise

The exercise formed part of this year’s Homowo Festival of the chiefs and people of Teshie. The clean-up exercise was supported by Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Force (GAF).

During the six-hour exercise, residents, sanitation officers and men from the GAF cleared up a large section of the bay.

Cholera does not discriminate

Nii Kwaobotswe urged residents to treat the cholera outbreak as a serious issue owing to its deadly nature.

He bemoaned the attitude of people who took sanitation matters for granted.

“The cholera virus does not discriminate, it can kill the old, rich, young and poor. People should,, therefore, not show apathy in the fight against the disease,’’ he said.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, said the issue of waste management should not be seen as the preserve of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

He advised the people to revive the culture of communal labour to help improve sanitation conditions in their respective communities.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Ms Benita Sena Okitey Duah, charged the sanitation taskforce in the area to adopt measures that would deter people from disposing of their waste indiscriminately.
