Three in court for gang rape

Three young men are before an Accra court for allegedly raping a junior high school girl.

They are Joshua Bediako, 22, security guard; Clement Benyah, 19, a distributor and Kingsford Kwame Kyi, 20, student. An accomplice, Kwadwo Bruce, is however, at large.

They were charged with rape when they appeared before the Magistrate Court, presided by Ms Arit Nsemoh.Their pleas were not taken and were remanded in police custody.

Presenting the facts of the case, Inspector Victor Dosoo said on August 21, 2015, the victim and her friend got stranded at Circle, Accra, on their way to Suhum and so decided to pass the night with an uncle at Abease-Caprice.

Inspector Dosoo said they did not meet the uncle and so a barbering shop owner who knew the uncle hosted them.He said that same night, the victim’s friend left for East Legon and left her alone.

The prosecutor said at about 1:00a.m,  Benyah, Kyi, Bediako and Bruce went to the barbering shop and told the host to release the victim  so that they could sleep with her, but the host refused.

Inspector Dosoo said the four became furious, broke the louvre blades, forced the door open and dragged the victim out and locked the host inside the shop.

According to the prosecutor the four then sent the victim to their room and forcibly slept with her in turns. Inspector Dosoo said one of the accused persons covered her mouth when she tried to shout for help.

They released her the next morning and she informed the host who in turn told her uncle. A report was made to the police.

The prosecutor said Bediako, Benyah and Kyi denied the offence when arrested but admitted to having slept with the complainant with her consent.
