Three invigilators arrested for BECE malpractice, says WAEC
The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has disclosed that three invigilators have been arrested for engaging in examination malpractice during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV on June 11, Mr Kapi highlighted that examination malpractices remain a persistent challenge, with such infractions reported year after year during national assessments.
According to him, the arrested invigilators were caught taking photographs of question papers during the exams—an action that contravenes WAEC’s strict protocols on examination security.
““We have had incidents where some invigilators were picked up at some of the centres for taking a snapshot of the question papers. I think so far we have had about three of them, and they have been handed over to the police," Mr Kapi stated.
He noted that one arrest was made in the Bono East Region, another in the Ahafo Region—both within the Bono enclave—and the third in the Greater Accra Region. These are the only reported cases at present.
“We are still monitoring all the centres just to ensure that everybody is complying with the rules. We have had one from the Bono East, one from the Ahafo Region, all within the Bono enclave. Then we also had one here in the Greater Accra Region. So far, these are the ones that we have received reports on,” he added.
Mr Kapi reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to upholding the credibility of its examinations and urged all stakeholders, including teachers, invigilators, and students, to adhere strictly to ethical standards throughout the assessment process.
