The Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) yesterday handed over a refurbished science laboratory to the authorities of the Achimota Senior High School in Accra.

Apart from refurbishing the laboratory, TIKA, which is the development agency of the Turkish government, also provided equipment such as retort stands, conical flasks, pipettes, galvanometers, microscopes, a metre bridge, voltmeters and hand lens .

By the refurbishment, the students will now have quality science practical lessons.

The $30,000-refurbished laboratory is expected to boost the teaching of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science.

Refurbishment of laboratory

At a handing-over ceremony in Accra yesterday, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Beatrice Adom, said the school made a request to TIKA in January for assistance to rehabilitate the Biology laboratory and provide science equipment and materials to support education.

According to her, education in the 21st century had become science-driven, hence the need for adequate tools and equipment to make the tuition relevant.

Prior to the refurbishment, she said, the laboratory was in a deplorable state but the school was financially challenged to buy enough equipment to stock the laboratory, hence teaching was done theoretically.

TIKA support

A representative of TIKA, Mr Mehmet Yazgan, told the Daily Graphic that the agency decided to support the school after it had received its request.

He said TIKA was a development agency with priority in education and health and had technically supported the country over the past few years.

Commendation

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Mrs Felicia Boakye-Yiadom, commended the agency for its immense support to improve science education in the school.

She said much as the government had been supplying the school with some of its needs, it was imperative that the global community assisted educational institutions.

She noted that the support would enable students to improve their practical skills through the utilisation of the equipment acquired.
