World Vision donates to Sekyere East District

Two communities in the Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region have benefited from educational materials provided by World Vision Ghana (WVG) to help improve on education in the district.

The items, worth US$71,000, included story books and toys to be used in teaching kindergarten pupils in schools in the Ahwerewa and Nkwankwanua communities.

The donation, made by philanthropists and manufacturing companies from Canada and USA, also included medical supplies and two KVIP facilities for the schools in the communities.

Some of the medical supplies were surgical gloves, weighing scales, and syringes. They were presented to the people, as the organisation’s support for health care delivery in the country.

Gift in Kinds project

The Operations Manager of WVG, Mr John Yankson, who made the presentation on behalf of World Vision International (WVI), said the donation formed part of the Gift in Kinds (GIK) project aimed at assisting communities meet some of their health, educational and sanitation needs.

He said the objective of the organisation was to improve on the development of the people in the communities in which they operated, pointing out that the organisation’s assistance was mainly geared towards the rural folks, particularly women, to assist them to improve on their livelihoods and also to support child health in communities in the areas of their operation.

Girl child education

The Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist of WVG, Mr Atta Arhin, stressed the importance of the provision of toilet facilities in schools, especially for the promotion of girl-child education.

He said many girls abandoned schools due to lack of toilet facilities where they could change, especially during their menstrual period.
He said he was hopeful that the provision of the toilet facility would improve particularly the enrolment of more girls in schools, and also improve on the education status of the district.

The Sekyere East District Director of Education, Nana Otuo Acheampong, who received the educational materials, expressed his gratitude to the organisation for the support and said he was optimistic that they would go a long way to improve teaching and learning, especially at the lower basic level.

The District Chief Executive for Sekyere East, Mr Solomon Adjei-Mensah, also expressed the government’s appreciation for the continuous support from WVI in healthcare, provision of potable water and the promotion of good and quality education in the district.
He said the government would continue to play its part and would need the support of all to bring development to the people.
