Two people fleeing to Togo arrested over alleged murder of roommate in relation to fraud proceeds

The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested two Nigerian nationals in connection with the alleged murder of a fellow Nigerian whose body was found in his room at Sanzirigu, a suburb of Tamale.

The suspects, identified as Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa, were arrested while allegedly attempting to flee to neighbouring Togo through the Tatale route.

The Police, in a statement said the body of the deceased, 36-year-old Nkemujika Uzorchuku Eze, was discovered on July, 11, 2026.

Preliminary investigations showed that the deceased, his wife, Peace Uzorchuku, the two suspects and another Nigerian national, Godwin Nwafor, had been living together in a three-bedroom apartment at Sanzirigu.

According to the Police, investigations began after a report that the deceased had been found lying motionless in a pool of blood in his bedroom.

A team of investigators who visited the scene found that he had sustained a deep cut to the forehead, while a towel had been stuffed into his mouth. The room had also been ransacked.

The Police said officers recovered a wooden pestle believed to have been used in the attack, together with other items, during a crime scene examination. The exhibits have been retained for forensic examination.

The body was conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where a medical officer confirmed him dead. It was later deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

The statement said intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the two suspects at Tatale on the same day while they were allegedly attempting to cross into Togo. They have since been handed over to the Tamale District Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist with investigations.

According to the Police, the suspects told investigators during interrogation that they had conspired to kill the deceased because he had allegedly withheld money they claimed had been obtained through internet fraud.

The Police said the allegations relating to internet fraud were based on the suspects' account and remain under investigation.

A search conducted after the arrest led to the recovery of several items believed to have been taken from the deceased's room. They included mobile phones, laptop computers, a tablet, jewellery, clothing, wristwatches, personal documents and other valuables. The Police said the items had been retained as exhibits.

The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear before court today, July, 13, 2026, while investigations continue.

In the statement, signed by the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Unit in Tamale, the Command appealed to the public to volunteer credible information to assist the Police in fighting crime.

It also said all persons found to have played a role in the case would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
