The prisoners whose names were not disclosed, were said to have died through a lorry accident on July 2, 2016.

Hiring Gang

Briefing the Daily Graphic about the incident, the Brong Ahafo Regional Prisons Public Relations Officer, ASP Vincent Bekyur Ziniel, said the prisoners were part of a hiring gang of four who were engaged to pack logs onto a KIA truck with registration number AS 291-10 on the Kenyasi-Ntotroso road on that fateful day.

He said the truck was involved in an accident at a spot known as AMS which is opposite the Prisons Cocoa Farm at Kenyasi as they were returning from work.

ASP Ziniel said one of the prisoners died on the spot while the second died later at the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital at Hwidiem.

According to him, one other prisoner got  severely injured and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital but has since been treated and discharged.

He said a fourth prisoner who was also injured in the accident was admitted, treated and discharged from the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital at Hwidiem.

The prison officers who escorted the prisoners and the driver of the KIA truck also got injured and were sent to other health facilities in the area. They have since been treated and discharged.

Family members

ASP Ziniel said the bodies  of the prisoners had been placed at the morgue of the St Elizabeth Catholic Hospital at Hwidiem for autopsy and that their families had been informed of the death of their relatives.

“Even though the deceased were prisoners, they still belong to their families and that is why we have to inform them,” he said.

ASP Ziniel added that even though the Regional Prisons Command had set up a committee, the police were also conducting their investigations into the matter to ascertain the cause of the accident.

“We will come out with the details of the incident upon the completion of the investigations by both the prisons and the police,” he stated.
