The equipment includes hospital beds, protective goggles, midwifery kit and stainless steel bowls.

Making the donation, the Regional Director of the UNFPA, Dr Benoit Kalasa, was optimistic that the equipment would move Ghana closer to achieving the MDG target of reducing maternal mortality.

Millennium Development Goal

He noted that the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce maternal mortality was the least performing goal in Ghana and said  Ghana was still far from reaching the target of 75 per cent reduction in maternal deaths, as too many women were still dying during pregnancy and childbirth.

Mr Kalasa reiterated the UNFPA’s  commitment to sustain its support to the government of Ghana and to the citizens of this nation, particularly women and girls, to fulfil its mission and the development agenda to deliver a nation where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”

The matron at the maternity ward of the hospital, Col. Mercy Yelbert,  who received the items on behalf of the hospital, commended the UNFPA for its benevolence and said the equipment would aid operations and activities of staff at the ward.

Mr Kalasa was accompanied by Ms Dennia Gayle, acting Country Representative of the UNFPA, and some officials of the UNFPA office in Ghana.
