“The initiative is a demonstration of our commitment to the concept of public-private participation in the domain of creating value from waste. The company hopes to establish at least one recycling plant in each district across the country to produce plastic waste bins and organic compost,” the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies, Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, said.

He made the disclosure at Vakpo during a thanksgiving service to climax activities marking the 125th anniversary celebration of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG).

Also on the occasion, some founding members and dedicated personalities of the church were honoured. Furthermore, a newly built guesthouse for the church put up at a cost of GH¢70,000.00 was inaugurated and a plaque for the new chapel was unveiled.

Dr Siaw Agyepong said the Vakpo recycling project, estimated to cost GH¢100,000.00, brought the existing number of such plants in the country to five, including those in Accra, Kumasi, Tema and Sekondi.

He expressed optimism that the introduction of waste recycling plants across the country would ease problems associated with the accumulation of refuse due to inadequate number of landfill sites. He said the intrioduction of the plants would also help reduce the spread of communicable diseases in the country.

Dr Siaw Agyepong revealed that Zoomlion had taken delivery of 85 brand new refuse trucks and 500 motor tricycles to facilitate the collection of household refuse. He said the company  was acquiring two new landfill sites in Kumasi and Tema.

He urged Ghanaians to observe good sanitation practices, keep their environment clean and participate in communal work to help clear filth from the communities.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the EPCG, Rt. Rev. Francis Amenu, paid glowing tribute to the founding members of the church and reiterated the need for Ghanaians to emulate the selflessness and loyalty displaced by the country’s heroes. He noted that at this stage of her development Ghana needed committed people who would promote the growth of the country.

He called on the church to use its platform to intensify public education on the adoption of healthy lifestyles in order to avoid contracting the deadly cholera and ebola diseases.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, lauded the contributions of the EPCG to the socio-economic development of the country and urged the church to put in place effective strategic plans in promoting its spiritual growth. He urged the church to address the needs and concerns of the youth as well.

The District Pastor of EPCG, Vakpo, Rev. Mrs Patience Boni-Anyomi, urged the Christian community to commit themselves to the spiritual growth of the church and serve as worthy disciples of Christ.
