Veterinary technicians on strike over disagreement with FWSC

Ghana Veterinary Medical Technicians across the country have withdrawn their services with immediate effect.

This means the technicians will not be at abattoirs and slaughter slabs in the country to inspect meat products.

They will also not be available to attend to cases of rabies, bird flu, and anthrax.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, the National President, Emmanuel Eshun, said as a result of the strike, all animals at various quarantine stations and those under quarantine would not be attended to either.

Decision

The decision to go on strike, the president explained, was due to the failure of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to give them market premium under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

He described the issue as an injustice, especially when several petitions to the FWSC, through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Veterinary Services Directorate, had gone unheeded.

“These petitions have not yet yielded the desired results as of now, because Fair Wages has used a government white paper issued in 2013 to deny us our due. Meanwhile our issue dates back to 2010, yet they are using the white paper retrospectively against us”, he claimed.

Labour Commission

Mr Eshun further alleged that when the matter was sent to the National Labour Commission, the FWSC failed to turn up.
