Vice-President receives heroic welcome at Komenda

The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has paid a courtesy visit to the Komenda Traditional Council to express her appreciation for their unwavering support during the 2024 election campaign, which led to her historic victory as Ghana’s first female Vice-President.

The visit formed part of her three-day working tour of the Central Region, which also included her participation in the 2025 PANAFEST and Emancipation Day celebrations.

As a native of Komenda, the Vice-President was received amidst thunderous drumming, traditional dancing and cheers from jubilant residents who lined the streets to welcome their daughter back home.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang walked into the palace of the Paramount Chief of Komenda, Okatakyi Komeh VIII, accompanied by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto; the Central Regional Minister, Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere,  some party executives and members of her family.

Also present were the Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice-President, Dr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the Presidential Staffer and Special Aide to the Vice-President, Prof. Theresah Ennim; the Head of Administration, Alberta Graham, and others.

Welcome, appeal

Welcoming the Vice-President, Okatakyi Komeh VIII, who spoke on behalf of the traditional council and the people, congratulated the Vice-President on her historic victory and praised her for remembering her roots.

“We thank you and the President for your leadership and for the honour you have brought to Komenda. But as you take on this great responsibility, we appeal to you to look back at your hometown and ensure its development,” he said.

The chief appealed for the revival of the Komenda Sugar Factory, which has been dormant for years, emphasising that its restoration would provide jobs for the youth and boost local commerce.

Okatakyi Komeh VIII also appealed for the reconstruction of key roads linking Komenda to nearby communities, support for senior high schools — particularly the provision of school buses — and the expansion of educational and fisheries facilities in the area.

“The Komenda Sugar Factory must not be allowed to waste away.

It is our hope that with your influence, it will be revived to create jobs and opportunities for our youth,” the Komenda Paramount Chief further said.

Message

Addressing the council of chiefs, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang thanked God and the people for their support and prayers throughout her journey to the country’s second-highest office.

“We thank the Almighty God for how far He has brought us.

I have returned home to express my deep appreciation for the faith you have placed in me and to ask for your continued prayers as we work to lead this country. It is our prayer that God walks with us through this journey,” she said.

The Vice-President also called on the chiefs and elders to continue guiding her with wisdom, stressing that she remained committed to being a leader for all Ghanaians.

“I am your daughter, and I count on you to straighten me whenever I go wrong.

We will work together to ensure that every citizen, regardless of where they come from, benefits from the government’s efforts,” she added.

Pledge

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further reassured the traditional council that her office remained committed to ensuring that Komenda received its fair share of national development.

“The Komenda Sugar Factory is a priority, and so are the roads, schools and health facilities in this area.

These are not promises; they are necessities that we will work to deliver,” she said.
