VRA awards scholarships to 61 needy students

Sixty-one students, including a visually impaired person have benefited from the Volta River Authority (VRA) Community Development Programme (CDP), a scholarship scheme which supports brilliant needy students in VRA’s operational areas.

The CDP was instituted in 2011 during the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the VRA to contribute to the development of education for sustainable development in communities the authority operates.

The beneficiaries of this year’s scheme included 15 tertiary and 46 senior high school (SHS) students. So far, 260 brilliant needy students have benefited from an amount of GH¢500,000 since the institution of the scheme.

Education

Making the presentation at Akosombo last Tuesday, the Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, Mr Isaac Kirk Koffi, an engineer,explained that the authority aimed at improving eduction in their operational areas to accelerate the socio-economic development in those communities.

Criteria

Mr Koffi further explained that the authority worked in collaboration with community leaders and educational institutions to select the beneficiaries in their respective communities.

He added that students who had completed their basic education with aggregates of six to 24 and without financial support to continue their education were those considered.

The chief executive said the authority was running a career guidance and counselling programme aimed at mentoring the second and third year scholarship beneficiaries on career choices as they prepared for tertiary education.

Appreciation

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Komla Ganyaglo, expressed appreciation to the benefactors for the initiative and advised the beneficiaries to work hard to justify the investments made in them by excelling in their respective fields of studies.
