Welder uses ‘raps’ to rob woman

A welder who approached a woman for a relationship but ended up robbing her has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit court.

Quarshie Bruno, 24, is said to have engaged the complainant in a conversation and requested for her phone number which she refused to give to him.

Bruno, instead of walking away, allegedly followed the complainant to an isolated spot, twisted her wrist, took her Samsung J7 mobile phone valued at GH¢860.00 and took to his heels.

The complainant’s shout for help drew the attention of a taxi driver who sped after Bruno and managed to stop him. The taxi driver searched him and found the complainant’s phone on him.

Bruno, who had earlier pleaded not guilty to robbery in September 2017, was sentenced by the court presided by Mr Aboagye Tandoh after a full trial.

“I have found out that the intention of the accused was not noble”, he said, and therefore found him guilty of the offence.

Presenting the facts, Chief Inspector(C/I) Victor Dosoo told the court that on September 10, 2017, at about 10:30pm the complainant was on her way home when Bruno met her and engaged her in a conversation.

In the process, Bruno asked for the complainant’s phone number but she declined the request.

C/I Dosoo said Bruno followed the complainant to an isolated place, twisted her wrist, took her Samsung J7 and bolted.

However, the complainant’s screams attracted the attention of a taxi driver who managed to apprehend the culprit and retrieve the phone.
Bruno was handed over to the Dansoman police.

In sentencing, the presiding judge said he took into consideration the accused’s plea for mitigation and the five months he had spent in custody.
