Women in key positions urged to mentor young girls

Ace broadcaster and host of The Standpoint, a popular television show, Oheneyere Dr Gifty Anti, has underscored the need for women in positions of influence to take up the challenge to mentor young girls in society to prevent them from going wayward.

According to her, the rate at which young girls were falling prey to waywardness was alarming, prompting the need for women and leaders in society to act with dispatch.

“As women leaders we have the responsibility to ensure that our girls do not go wayward,” she said.

Oheneyere Dr Anti, who is the wife of the chief of Edumasa, Oyiakehyire Nana Ansah Kwao IV, was speaking at the maiden conference of the Dominion African Ladies Club, a group under the Dominion Leaders Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Accra.

The conference brought together professionals from various fields of endeavour including banking, entertainment, journalism and law.

It was meant to discuss ways to deal with the challenges women, girls and the vulnerable faced in society.

As part of his contribution to the activities of the club, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Finance, Dr Nii Kotei Dzani, donated GH¢20,000.

Mentorship

Oheneyere Dr Anti, who is also a journalist and has NGOs that promote women’s rights, explained that women of influence in society served as role models to a lot of young girls, and must do their best to turn their lives around.

“As women leaders, we must do our best to influence young girls directly or indirectly to keep their lives in order,” she said.

She added that women must show great deal of concerns regarding issues of women, and eschew backbiting and acrimony.

In her address, the Founder of the Dominion African Ladies Club, Ms Martha Anang, said some young girls found it difficult to approach women of influence in society, “but our women leaders must do their best to bring such girls closer to them”.

Ms Anang added that it was not right for such girls to be left on their own and think that they would be fine.

In spite of that, she shared in the concerns raised earlier by Oheneyere Dr Anti and other discussants at the conference that young girls’ lives could be influenced directly and indirectly.

Objective of club

Ms Anang stated that the club would officially be launched in the last quarter of this year.

Elaborating on the objectives of the club, she indicated that it would do things differently from sister clubs in the country, adding, “While other sister clubs are focused on curative forms of help and assistance, the Dominion African Ladies Club focuses more on preventive measures”.

In their bid to mentor young girls, Ms Anang noted that the organisation had put in place special mentoring programmes for girls in society.
