Work on sea defence projects in W/Region progressing steadily
Work on the sea defence and breakwater projects in the coastal communities in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region is progressing steadly.

Estimated at $140 million, the projects are expected to ease the challenges of residents of Aboadzie, Aboasi, the Aboadze Thermal Plant, Nkotompo, Ngyeresia, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Adjoa and other coastal areas in the region.
The project involves the use of boulders to control the high tidal waves and enable residents to access the beaches.

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, told journalists during a tour of the project sites that the government attached a lot of seriousness to the projects.
He said the contribution of those communities to national development could not be underestimated hence the government’s decision to help alleviate the plight of residents in coastal communities.
Adjoa
At Adjoa in the Ahanta West District, he observed that the coastlines were being eroded at an alarming rate due to the strong tidal waves.
He explained that the choice of breakwater was perfect since it would enable the communities and visitors to those areas have access to their beautiful and sandy beaches.
New Takoradi & Nkotompo
At New Takoradi in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis, Dr Agyemang-Mensah inspected the $35million sea defence project.

The project, which is being executed by Vuulux Company, will protect and raise the eroded areas about 5.5 metres above sea level and reclaim an area measuring about 25 metres.
At Nkotompo, where many of the residential facilities are located at the tip of the cliff, the people commended the government for the intervention.
The minister assured the people of the government’s commitment to the completion of the project, which includes the construction of 2,000 metres of armour rock revetment with gabion stabilisation and lateritic backfilling at the cost of $23 million.
Aboadze
On the $29 million project at Aboadze, the minister indicated that it was not only meant to save the community, but to also protect the thermal plant which was being threatened due to sand winning by some residents.
