The facility is to provide support for newborn babies with critical health conditions and help reduce infant and child mortality in the three northern regions.
It will also serve as a training centre for medical students of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
The provision of the centre, which was built through a collaboration between the MTN Ghana Foundation and Hauwei Technologies, is aimed at helping Ghana to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 as set by the United Nations to reduce child mortality rate by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015.
The MTN Ghana Foundation sponsored the construction of the facility at a cost of GH¢335,000 while the equipment was provided by Hauwei Technologies at a cost of GH¢70,000.
The facility is expected to impact the lives of more than 1,200 neonates in the three regions of the north annually.
Commendation
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the TTH, Dr Prosper Akambong, expressed gratitude to the benefactors and pledged to use the facilities judiciously.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, appealed to other corporate bodies to also extend their support to the health sector as the government alone could not shoulder the burden of providing such facilities across the country.
Support
The Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs Cynthia Lumor, expressed the hope that the facility would help reduce infant and under-five mortality rates which, according to the Ghana Health Service, accounted for 40 per cent of deaths in the country.
She said since the launch of the foundation in 2007, it had invested more than GH¢19million in over 103 community development projects in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment, which according to her had impacted over two million people indirectly in the country.
