The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 to the Renal Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The money was contributed by the staff of the authority during their annual thanksgiving service held earlier in the year.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Accra, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Communications and Public Affairs of the GRA, Mrs Annie Anipa, said the hospital was selected based on its immense contribution to the well-being of Ghanaians.

“The Renal Unit has, over the past years contributed immensely to the operations of the GRA. For instance, recently one of our members of staff underwent  successful surgery at the centre after she had been diagnosed of a kidney problem,” she said.

Mrs Anipa said the GRA would continue to contribute towards the building of the nation, since the government alone could not shoulder that responsibility.

Operations at Renal Unit

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mr Albert Botwey, who received the cheque on behalf of the Renal Unit, thanked the management and staff of the GRA and assured them that the donation would be used for its intended purpose.

According to him, since the Renal Unit was established, it continued to suffer from the lack of infrastructure and equipment.

“We used to have five patients at the centre but, as I speak to you, we have about 180 patients, most of whom do not have the financial means to undergo transplantation,” Mr Botwey said.

He said the management of the hospital was putting in place measures and soliciting funds to expand the infrastructure of the unit to international standards.

The Head of Renal Diseases and Resource Requirement at the unit, Dr Charlotte Osafo, called on corporate bodies to assist the unit in the discharge of its duties.

He said most of the patients there “are put on dialysis because they cannot afford transplantation, which costs about GH¢100,000”.
