NGO donates hospital equipment to Saltpond Hospital
Health care delivery in rural Ghana faces dire challenges, with a large portion of rural communities still without access to basic health care services.
The rural communities lag behind in all the vital numbers such as the number of health care facilities, health workers or hospital facilities, as against the large army of patients seeking care.
To help mitigate the challange, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Amicus Onlus Ghana, has donated some hospital equipment to the Saltpond Hospital in the Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region.

The donation includes beds, adult diapers and other medical items and consumables.
Support
Speaking at a ceremony last Wednesday to present the items to the hospital at Saltpond, the Administrator of Amicus Onlus Ghana, Mr Isaac Baiden, said there was the need for the private sector to support health care providers and facilities in rural areas.
He said it was the aim of the organisation to make health care services affordable and easily accessible in deprived communities.
“Amicus Onlus Ghana in collaboration with its partners, Dr Lino Masini and Dr Alessandro Silva, have over the years supported some health care institutions in Ghana, in particular the Saltpond Hospital, Ghana Red Cross and Baobab Medical Centre in the Central Region,” he added.
Baobab Medical Centre
Amicus Onlus had also provided health care services and other medical support to residents of Biriwa and neighbouring communities through the Baobab Medical Centre (BMC).
The Baobab Medical Centre has been operating in Biriwa in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for 12 years.

The Medical Superintendent of the Saltpond Municipal Hospital, Dr Derek A. Bonsu, received the items on behalf of the hospital and commended the NGO for the gesture.
He said the items would help greatly in providing the people in the municipality with quality health care delivery.
He also commended Prof. Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana for rehabilitating the Accident and Emergency Ward of the hospital.
Dr Bonsu said the hospital needed a modern Emergency and Obstetrics Theatre and requested the government to take it up in view of the cost involved.
