Rotary Club of Accra-Osu Oxford Street refurbishes Madina Polyclinic

The Rotary Club of Accra-Osu Oxford Street has refurbished a maternity block at the Madina Polyclinic, near the Rawlings Circle, to ensure safe delivery.

The GH¢32,000 refurbishment project involved the expansion of the delivery room to two bays, repairs of a leaking suspended concrete slab, changing of surface wiring to conduit wiring and trunking of exposed wires.

Significance

According to the president of the club, Mr Osei Agyeman-Badu, their intervention was aimed at contributing their quota towards reducing maternal mortality rate in the country.

“A good maternal healthcare facility attracts users not only because of the competence and professionalism of its staff, but also the infrastructure and equipment of the facility,” he stated.

Mr Agyeman-Badu, who was speaking at a ceremony to hand over the facility yesterday, also explained that the project was undertaken in line with Rotary’s commitment to the promotion of maternal and child health in deprived communities around the world.

“We see this project as the first of several we want to undertake here at the Maternity Block to improve the services offered to expectant and new mothers,” he added.

According to him, his outfit would continue to contribute to society by providing social amenities such as clean water and education to boost local economies.

Upgrade

The Administrator of the polyclinic, Mr Yeboah Fordjour, said the facility, which began operations as a basic health centre that focused on reproductive and child health services, was later upgraded to the status of a polyclinic.

He stated that the clinic had over the years, provided out patient department (OPD) and laboratory services. The officer, however, indicated that the lack of adequate infrastructure and finances had hindered effective health delivery.

“The hospital has some outlined challenges such as space constraint, the lack of ambulances and the delay by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to pay claims,” he said.

He stated that about 60 per cent of patients who visited the health facility were on the insurance scheme and, therefore, appealed for the timely payment of the claims to improve services.

The Municipal Director of Health Services, La-Nkwantanang, Madina Municipality, Madam Priscilla Anima Siaw, called for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure quality healthcare across the country.
